Lifeguard Training Course

This blended learning class is designed to teach participants the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies, and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services personnel take over.

Registration:

  • Registration will begin one month before the class date, at the NMSU Aquatic Center. Payment for course and course materials will be required on the first scheduled class after the successful completion of the prerequisites.
  • Lifeguard candidates must be 15 years of age on or before the final scheduled session for the course.
  • Candidates must successfully complete a 300-yard continuous swim using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both.
  • Candidates must tread water only using their legs for 2 minutes without support and without stopping.
  • Starting in the water, candidates must swim 20 yards, dive to retrieve a 10-pound object at a depth of 7-10 feet, resurface, and return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface. Candidates must complete this skill within 1 minute and 40 seconds.
