American Red Cross Certification Courses
University Recreation provides certification courses in First Aid/CPR/AED, Lifeguarding, Lifeguard Instructor, Wilderness Remote First Aid, and more! All classes are American Red Cross certified.
First Aid/CPR/AED Class - In Person
- New Mexico State University Activity Center
This class is designed to teach participants how to recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing, and first-aid emergencies. Participants will learn how to give immediate care to a suddenly injured or ill person until more advanced medical personnel arrive and take over. This class covers instruction for adults and pediatrics.
Prerequisites: None.
- Course Cost: $85 (All costs are due at registrations).
- Re-Certification Cost: $40.00
- To be eligible for re-certification, you must provide a current CPR certificate or if the certificate has expired within 30 days.
Materials:
- Instructions on how to obtain the digital copy of the participant manual will be emailed after registration/payment is complete.
- First Aid/CPR/AED Participant’s Manual can be purchased at https://www.redcross.org/store/first-aid-cpr-aed-participants-manual/754100.html.
- Pocket masks and keychain breathing barriers can be purchased at the NMSU Outdoor Center. Class participants can receive a discount by providing their receipt of registration.

First Aid/CPR/AED Contract Class (For Departments and Organizations)
The purpose of this course is to teach those with a duty to act, the knowledge and skills needed to respond appropriately to first aid, breathing, and cardiac emergencies. This course offering is designed for community businesses and other health professional groups seeking certification.
Course Cost:
- For groups of 11 or less $85.00 per person
- For groups of 12 or more: $80.00 per person

Lifeguard Training Course
- New Mexico State University Aquatic Center & New Mexico State University Activity Center
This blended learning class is designed to teach participants the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies, and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services personnel take over.
Prerequisites:
- Lifeguard candidates must be 15 years of age on or before the final scheduled session for the course.
- Candidates must successfully complete a 300-yard continuous swim using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both.
- Candidates must tread water only using their legs for 2 minutes without support and without stopping.
- Starting in the water, candidates must swim 20 yards, dive to retrieve a 10-pound object at a depth of 7-10 feet, resurface, and return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface. Candidates must complete this skill within 1 minute and 40 seconds.

Lifeguard Instructor Course
- New Mexico State University Aquatic Center and Activity Center
Instructor candidates are trained to teach basic-level lifeguarding, waterfront lifeguarding, waterpark lifeguarding, shallow water attendant (all including first aid), lifeguard management, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Administering Emergency Oxygen, and Bloodborne Pathogen Training (Preventing Disease Transmission and Basic Water Rescue courses). Instructor candidates will become familiar with GuardStart: Lifeguarding Tomorrow and the Water Safety presentations.
Prerequisites:
- Lifeguard instructor candidates must be at least 17 years of age on or before the last scheduled day of the instructor course.
- Possesses a current basic-level certification in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED.
- Candidates must successfully complete the pre-course session
- Demonstrate competency in ALL Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR skills.
- Successfully complete the online Introduction to the Lifegaurding Instructor Course before the first day of the course.
- Successfully complete the pre-course skills session. (Pre-course session is conducted the first day of the course.)

Lifeguard Instructor/Instructor Trainer In-Person Review Course

All Lifeguarding Instructors and Lifeguarding Instructor Trainers must complete an in-person review course every two years to maintain their certification(s). This course satisfies the requirement by covering any updated material, polishing skills, drills, and review of administrative resources and procedures.

- Instructors or Instructor Trainers must possess a Lifeguarding Instructor or Instructor Trainer Certification

First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Course

This course will train instructor candidates to teach basic-level American Red Cross First Aid CPR and AED courses.
Prerequisites:
- Instructor candidates must be at least 16 years of age on or before the last scheduled day of the instructor course.
- Possesses a current basic-level certification in First Aid/CPR/AED.
- Candidates must successfully complete the online coursework before attending classroom session.
- Successfully complete the pre-course skills session. Pre-course session is conducted the first day of the course.
- Attend all classroom sessions.
- Demonstrate competency in ALL skills throughout the course.

Wilderness and Remote First Aid Course
Wilderness and Remote First Aid Course

In the American Red Cross Wilderness and Remote First Aid course, students learn basic first aid principles and skills in order to respond to emergencies and give care in areas that do not have access to immediate emergency medical services (EMS), such as wilderness and remote environments. Emergency situations also include natural disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes.
Prerequisites:
- Current adult CPR/AED certification.
- Participants must be 14 years of age or older on or before the scheduled session of the course.
