NMSU’s Recreation Center enhances the NMSU experience by providing programs, services and facilities that promote healthy lifestyles, build community and enable student success. NMSU Rec Sports offers a variety of recreation, fitness and sport opportunities that include aquatics, intramurals, group fitness, personal training, outdoor and instructional classes.

Get involved and get AggieFit!  As a full-time NMSU student, you are already a member of AggieFit. All full-time students who have paid the appropriate fees through their tuition have access to NMSU Rec Sports facilities by simply showing their NMSU ID card. Part-time students may utilize the facilities and programs by purchasing the membership for a fee of $40/semester.

    Water Safety Instructor Course

    04:00 PM - 07:00 PM

    The Water Safety Instructor Course focuses on training instructor candidates to teach courses in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions, and how to evaluate participants’ progress.

    Prerequisites:

    • Must be at least 16 years of age on or before the final scheduled session of the course.
    • Must complete 25 yards of each: front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke.
    • Must butterfly for 15 yards.
    • Maintain position on back one minute in deep water.
    • Tread water for one minute.
    • Successfully complete the pre-course session.

    Cost: $115.00

    Online Fee: $35.00

    Location: NMSU Aquatic Center

    Registration begins one month prior to class at the NMSU Aquatic Center.

    Lifeguard Training Course

    04:00 PM - 07:00 PM

    This blended learning course is designed to teach individuals the skill sand knowledge required in order to develop effective lifeguarding systems at swimming pools. Course participants will learn what it takes to be a professional lifeguard by learning: job responsibilities, patron surveillance skills, rescue skills, and first aid/cpr/aed skills.

    Prerequisites:

    • Swim 300 yards continuously, demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both.
    • Tread water for two minutes.
    • Swim 20 yards and retrieve a 10 pound object in one minute and 40 seconds.

    Cost: $115.00

    Online Fee: $35.00

    Location: NMSU Aquatic Center

    Registration will be conducted one month prior to the class at the NMSU Aquatic Center.
