Outdoor Trips

Trip Sign Ups

All trip sign ups are conducted at the Outdoor Center in room 108 of the Activity Center.
Deadlines for sign ups will be on the Tuesday before the trip at 5:30pm.
Only full time students are eligible to participate in Outdoor Recreation trips.
Students may pay for trips by cash, credit, or by check. (The Outdoor Center can only issue refunds to those paying by credit card.)

Pre-Trip Meetings

All trips will have a pre-trip meeting on the Tuesday prior to the trip at 5:30pm at the Outdoor Center. The pre-trip meeting is conducted to inform participants of necessary logistics, equipment, and activities associated with the trip, as well as allow participants to: meet trip leaders, meet other participants, and complete mandatory paperwork. All participants must fill out an Informed Consent Form and a Medical Information Form. If participants are unable to attend the pre-trip meeting, participants must set up other arrangements with the trip leader prior to the start of the trip.

*Outdoor Recreation reserves the right to cancel activities without sufficient enrollment or due to adverse weather conditions. No refunds for “no shows.”

Land Navigation Skills Clinic – Free @ NMSU Activity Center

Sometimes those who wander are, in fact, lost. Don’t be that guy; let NMSU Outdoor Leadership teach you the basic skills needed to read and use a map and compass to keep yourself found. No skills/equipment necessary, we will provide everything. Meeting and Registration will be in the Outdoor Center, AC 108.

Pecan Classic Swim Meet @ NMSU Aquatic Center Outdoor Pool

Introduction to Backpacking – $25

Are you new to backpacking and the outdoors? NMSU Outdoor Rec will cover all the basics from proper clothing and equipment, navigation and purifying water, and so much more to help you become more confident in your own backpacking adventures. We will hike approximately 7 miles in the White Mountain Wilderness, over 2.5 days.

Cave Climbing Day Trip – $15

No plans for Saturday? The Cave Climbing Co is El Paso’s only indoor bouldering gym; let NMSU OLP take you on a day trip to the Cave, where we will spend the morning bouldering in the gym and then have lunch in El Paso.

Wilderness Remote First Aid – $250

Designed for outdoor professionals, enthusiasts, and anyone who works or spends time in remote environments, this course teaches advanced skills to be used in emergencies when help from professional first responders may be far away. Based on the Boy Scouts of America Wilderness First Aid Curriculum and Doctrine Guidelines, this course aligns with OSHA’s Best Practices for Workplace First Aid Training Programs.

Course length: 16 hours

Topics include:

Primary and Secondary Assessments
Head/Brain, Neck and Spinal Injuries
Heat-Related Emergencies
Hypothermia
Altitude-Related Illnesses

Allergies and Anaphylaxis
Burns
Bone and Joint Injuries
Wounds and Wound Infection

2 year certification

Digital certificate available upon successful completion of course.

Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta Overnight – $75

Overnight trip to the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque. Enjoy a day full of beauty and fun as we watch the mass ascension of hundreds of wonderful balloons and sample New Mexican foods and crafts. Fee includes hotel room, transportation, and entrance to the balloon park.

Better Backpacking Weekend – $25

Better Backpacking is a three-day course that will take a beginning backpacker to the next level of outdoor skills and independence. The trip involves intermediate terrain covering increased mileage and elevation; expect 10-15mi total.

Offering an easy approach hike and vast, open views of Bar and Soledad canyon, come join us on this Sunset hike that will offer excellent opportunities to view and photograph a local gem in the desert.  Featuring ruins, geologic monoliths, and even a waterfall, come enjoy the canyon with NMSU for the last trip of the Spring Semester!
