Trip Sign Ups

  • All trip sign ups are conducted at the Outdoor Center in room 108 of the Activity Center.
  • Deadlines for sign ups will be on the Tuesday before the trip at 5:30pm.
  • Only Full Time Students are eligible to participate in Outdoor Recreation trips.
  • Students may pay for trips by credit/debit card, or by check. (The Outdoor Center can only issue refunds to those paying by credit card.)

Pre-Trip Meetings

All trips will have a pre-trip meeting on the Tuesday prior to the trip at 5:30pm at the Outdoor Center. The pre-trip meeting is conducted to inform participants of necessary logistics, equipment, and activities associated with the trip, as well as allow participants to: meet trip leaders, meet other participants, and complete mandatory paperwork. All participants must fill out an Informed Consent Form and a Medical Information Form. If participants are unable to attend the pre-trip meeting, participants must set up other arrangements with the trip leader prior to the start of the trip.

*Outdoor Recreation reserves the right to cancel activities without sufficient enrollment or due to adverse weather conditions. No refunds for “no shows.”


Fall 2021 Outdoor Recreation Event Schedule

Ice Cream Bike Ride: $FREE$

August 29th

Riding a bike has tons of great health benefits! Mostly, we like how happy it makes us to pedal around on two wheels!  On this ride, we will double up on the happy and take a group ride to a nearby ice cream shop.  Along the way, we will also talk about bike safety while riding your bike around the city.  (Rental Bikes available for a fee)


Disc Golf on Campus

Aug. 30th, Oct. 1st, Oct. 31st, Nov. 30th

Throwing stuff is fun.  Slinging discs at baskets with friends is just that much more fun!  Once a month, we will set up 9 portable disc golf baskets on campus for the NMSU community to play a round. Disc Golf on October 31st will include a costume contest! Sign up and disc rental at the Outdoor Center. Disc Rental $1 per set.


Zozobra and Wheeler Peak: $35.00

September 3rd-5th

Participate in the ceremonial burning of the “Zozobra” on Friday night, and hike up to the tallest peak in NM, Wheeler Peak, on Saturday.  “Zozobra” is a Spanish word for worry or anxiety. During the event, you submit your glooms to burn with Zozobra.  Don’t miss your chance to be part of this century long tradition.


 Adventure to Robinson’s Cave: $15.00

September 18th-19th

Deep in the high country of the Black Range in the Gila National Forest sits an open cave perfect for exploration.  This trip will include a night of camping under the stars, and then we will experience a full day of exploring the mountains, from above and below!


Bike Maintenance Clinic: $FREE$

September 20th

This 1-hour clinic will get you started on your journey to cruising problem free on your bike.  Learn the names of bike parts, how to do a basic inspection, and how to fix a flat tire.  Ends with a short ride around campus.   


Alumni Bike Ride to A-Mountain: $FREE$

September 25th

Enjoy a fun group ride from the Pan Am lot up Geothermal, around A-Mountain, and then back in time for tailgating.  Alumni, current students, and friends are all welcome for this open group ride up a memorable trail on Homecoming Day.


Bird Watching at Dripping Springs: $Free$

September 25th

Take an easy hike to the lovely Dripping Springs in the Organ Mountains. While appreciating the natural aesthetic we will also be watching birds. The trip is in tune with the beginning of fall bird migration, as birds that breed hundreds of miles north begin their southward migration. Several expert bird watchers will help guide this trip. Lets see what we can find!

Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta $75.00

October 8th-9th

A quick trip to the world-famous balloon fiesta in Albuquerque.  Friday night we will see fireworks and balloons glow, and then Saturday morning we will see hundreds of hot air balloons during Mass Ascension while walking around in the park. 


Clinic – How to Lighten You Pack: $Free$

October 11th

Before you gear up for your next backpacking trip, sit down with us and learn how to stay comfortable while carrying less weight.  Also, get an intro on how easy it is to get into BIKEpacking.


Beginning Backpacking: $25.00

October 15th -17th

New to camping? This trip is geared for the beginner. Work on your backcountry skills and experience nature on a low-risk trip to the mountains.  We will cover a lot of topics including gear, water filtration, Leave No Trace, cooking, and other essentials.

Climbing Clinic – Gym to Crag: $Free$

November 1st
Learn how to take the leap from plastic to real rock!  We will explain how to prepare for your first outdoor climbing trip and be here to answer your questions.


Hike to Fall Colors in Cloudcroft: $2

November 6th
Come with us on a day hike through the woods in Cloudcroft, NM.  We will be hiking on the Trestle Trail to see the old wooden railroads from the 1800s. The area is surrounded by beautiful thick woods and bound to be breathtaking to see as the leaves change colors!


Bouldering at Hueco Tanks: $21.00

November 7th
World class pebble-wrestling!  We will provide equipment and a guide.  Our goal is to get everyone to the top of at least one boulder.  We also want to help you find your next project! Climbers of all abilities are encouraged to join.


Sport Climbing: $15.00 or $25.00

November 13th-14th
Join us at the Rough and Readies for some top rope and lead climbing! Sport climbing weekend will be two full days of learning the skills you need to get climbing outside on your own. Instruction and challenges will be tailored to each person to help them find the “flow state” and be successful. Equipment provided. Sign up for one day for $15 or both days for $25.


Bouldering Competition: $Free$

November 18th

Compete against other students in 3 different categories.  Winners get trophies, and every competitor is entered into the prize drawing. Students only.


Bosque Birding Overnighter: $15.00

November 19th-20th

This trip captures the fascinating behavior of birds. Travel to Bosque Del Apache Wildlife Refuge and watch thousands of cranes and waterfowl descend on southern New Mexico. Enjoy a very large and magnificent number of birds with ease. During the trip we will be camping and experiencing the amazing flyout of thousands of birds.
