Trip Sign Ups

  • All trip sign ups are conducted at the Outdoor Center in room 108 of the Activity Center.
  • Deadlines for sign ups will be on the Tuesday before the trip at 5:30pm.
  • Only Full Time Students are eligible to participate in Outdoor Recreation trips.
  • Students may pay for trips by credit/debit card, or by check. (The Outdoor Center can only issue refunds to those paying by credit card.)

Pre-Trip Meetings

All trips will have a pre-trip meeting on the Tuesday prior to the trip at 5:30pm at the Outdoor Center. The pre-trip meeting is conducted to inform participants of necessary logistics, equipment, and activities associated with the trip, as well as allow participants to: meet trip leaders, meet other participants, and complete mandatory paperwork. All participants must fill out an Informed Consent Form and a Medical Information Form. If participants are unable to attend the pre-trip meeting, participants must set up other arrangements with the trip leader prior to the start of the trip.

*Outdoor Recreation reserves the right to cancel activities without sufficient enrollment or due to adverse weather conditions. No refunds for “no shows.”

Off Campus Trips

Picacho Peak Hike and Geography Tour: $FREE$ 

January 22nd

Take a short trip to expand your perspective of the Mesilla Valley by hiking up Picacho Peak. The hike leader will take several stops to explain different geology features of the mountain!


Hueco Tanks Bouldering Tour : $21.00

January 29th

World-class pebble wrestling! We will provide equipment and a guide. Our goal is to get everyone at the top of at least one boulder. We also want to help you find your next project! Climbers of all abilities are encouraged to join.


White Sands Fun Day: $10.00

February 19th

Join us on a half day excursion to a jewel of the southwest. Sled down the dunes, have a picnic and enjoy the sunset at one of New Mexico’s most loved National Parks.


Spring Break Adventure – Moab and More! $TBD

March 7th-10th *sign up before March 1st*

We have planned a SPRING BREAK road trip so you don’t have to! Jump in and enjoy the ride! We will stop at several scenic spots to include Mesa Verde, Shiprock, Four Corners, Arches and More. The trip will also include a fun filled day of rock climbing on beautiful sandstone cliffs in Moab!


Backpacking for Beginners: $30.00

March 18th-20th

New to camping? This trip is geared for the beginner. Work on your backcountry skills and experience nature on a low-risk trip to the mountains. We will cover a lot of topics including gear, water filtration, Leave No Trace, cooking and other essentials.


Hike to Baylor Canyon – Organ Mountains: $FREE$

March 26th

The Baylor Canyon trail crosses the Organ Mountains from the west to east. The view from the saddle provides hikers with a view of Las Cruces on one side and White Sands on the other! The trail is long, but relatively easy for a hike in the Organs.


Holiday Hike – Slot Canyon: $FREE$

April 15th

The slot canyon is a moderate loop hike and friendly for everyone. Hikers will go through a tall slot canyon formed by erosion. The trail also offers opportunities to witness a variety of flora and fauna as well.


Advanced Backpacking: $30.00

Take your backpacking skills to the next level and join us for a trip to the mountains. Get more in-depth knowledge so you can be prepared to backpack whether it’s on your own or with some friends.



Sport Climbing: $21 each day

April 30th – top rope climbing instruction

May 1st – lead climbing instruction Join us for some top rope and lead climbing!

Sport climbing weekend will be two full days of learning the skills you need to get climbing outside on your own. Instruction and challenges will be tailored to each person to help them find the “flow state” and be successful.


On Campus Events

Wilderness Remote First Aid: $200.00

March 5th-6th

In the American Red Cross Wilderness and Remote First Aid course, students learn basic first aid principles and skills in order to respond to emergencies and give care in areas such as wilderness and remote environments. Emergency situations also include natural disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes. Prerequisites: -Current adult CPR/AED certification.


Bouldering Competition: $Free$

April 14th

Compete against other students in 3 different categories. Winners get T-shirts, and every competitor is entered into the prize drawing. Students only.
